Nerikomi Mugs
These beautiful mugs are created by Alex Wilkinson in the Mystery Creek Ceramics studio using traditional methods and innovative processes.
The Nerikomi technique originated in Japan - it means the folding of coloured clay. This technique facilitates random surface design which offers unique individual pieces. Share in the joyful satisfaction of the idiosyncratic beauty of each variant, even coming from the same block of coloured clay.
Imagine savouring a favourite beverage in your exclusive hand-built one-of-a-kind mug – the organic smoothness holding the delicate memories of each formative processes.
Approximate size: 7cm tall by 8cm wide or 200ml
Please note due to the nature of this nerikomi process that the item you receive may not be exactly as pictured due to natural warping of the porcelain clay and slight differences in the design due to the different layers in the block that they are built from.
"Nerikomi is an incredibly slow way of making ceramics one piece can take over a month to construct and then two weeks to fire but I absolutely love it. I love the randomness of the process. We can control the pattern to an extent but once the piece gets in the slab roller and in the kiln all kinds of weird and wonderful things can happen. I find that giving in to the serendipity of the process is incredibly cathartic"
