Nichola Te Kiri earrings - Split Taaniko

These stunning earrings are by NZ textile and fashion/jewellery designer Nichola Te Kiri.

The earrings are made from perspex and bamboo. Dimensions 50mm diameter.

The pattern used on these earrings is Nicholas take on the tāniko pattern, which expresses histories, ideas and values important in Te Ao Māori (The Maori World). This specific tāniko pattern is her interpretation of Papatūānuku (Mother Earth) and our whenua (land). It is a section of a larger piece of tāniko work.

Background to Tāniko: Tāniko is a uniquely Maori variation of whatu (twining) and was used to weave the colourful, intricate borders of Cloaks. In Cloak making, Tāniko was used only for borders since the weave is too stiff to suit entire garments. Tāniko is also used to make Pari (bodices), tipare (head bands), Tapeka (sashes), Tātua (belts) and taonga whakapaipai (jewellery). Tāniko designs express histories, ideas and values important in Te Ao Maori (The Maori World).

Nichola Te Kiri, of dual Māori and Pākeha heritage, was raised in Kirikiriroa (Hamilton), Aotearoa. Her upbringing within two worlds has helped develop her aesthetic for bold and courageous lines, prints and designs. A natural creative all her life, Nichola explores narratives drawn from the environment around her as well as her heritage and upbringing. Curiosity and innovation drive Nichola to go beyond expectation, always striving to produce quality products.
