Ghosts on Every Corner Book
"Ghosts on Every Corner" is a love letter to Ōtautahi Christchurch and the places we all remember. This book follows on from the recent exhibition ‘A Ghost on Every Corner’ by artist Mike Beer, at Pumanawa Gallery at the Arts Centre Christchurch.
Mike recreated scale models of 10 local and loved buildings that were chosen after talking to people in Christchurch about places of significance, some of which were destroyed in the 2011 earthquake.
Content by Dr Reuben Woods and photographs by Dave Richards add context and perspective to Ghostcat's immaculate recreations. Ghosts on Every Corner suggests the importance of community and memory through our recollections of the places that matter to us - from Wizards Arcade to the Canterbury Sales Yards, this book spans the spots where communities thrived and stories were made, a slice of Ōtautahi's past that will resonate with anyone who remembers their favourites places...
”It’s called Ghosts on Every Corner. It’s the fact that something can go, but the ghost of that memory can still exist. For instance, I used to love hanging out with friends at Java (a cafe on the corner of High and Lichfield Streets).
That place is gone now, but the memory is still there like a ghost, so that’s what the project represents”.
