Handwoven Kete Whakairo - Papakirango

This stunning kete whakairo is handmade by contemporary Ngāi Tahu textile artist Alice Spittle.

It has been handwoven using traditional techniques with muka fibre extracted from Aotearoa NZ harakeke/flax. 

The kete features the distinct papakirango geometric pattern. This intricate, diagonal diamond design is highly valued for its striking appearance and symbolic meaning of protection and warding off negative forces.

Woven expertly using taki rua weaving techniques to create the geometric color contrast and has a durable tāpiki (flat) base, and beautiful plaited muka (flax fibre) handles. These are nice and long so they sit comfortably over your shoulder.

This kete represents many many hours of work, from harvest and preparation through to the actual weaving and finishing. It is supplied in a custom black box for presentation.

40cm wide, 25cm high (the kete part), handles add another 40cm in height
