Rattan is a natural, sustainable material derived from the rattan palm – a fast-growing vine found in tropical regions. Known for its strength, flexibility, and lightweight nature, rattan is ideal for crafting beautiful, durable products with an organic feel. Its natural variations in colour and texture make every piece unique.

How to Clean & Care for Rattan:

Dust regularly with a soft cloth or brush to remove surface dirt. For deeper cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth with mild soapy water – avoid soaking the material.

Allow to air dry fully in a well-ventilated space, away from direct sunlight or heat.To maintain its natural finish, avoid harsh cleaners or prolonged exposure to moisture.

If needed, gently sand rough patches and touch up with natural oil or beeswax to preserve the rattan’s look. This approach keeps your rattan looking beautiful and lasting for years, while embracing its natural charm.

About Mahana:

"Kia Ora, my name is Casey and I am the creative behind Mahana NZ. My husband Danny and I are both teachers. I am an early childhood teacher and together we were in the process of establishing a centre called Inspired Aotearoa Early Learning Village.

In our search to find resources that suited our philosophy and ethos, we struggled to find resources to suit, and when we did find resources, they weren't available here in Aotearoa. So, I got to work and decided to design resources that were not only educational but attractive at the same time. I wanted our resources to have a strong connection to Aotearoa, NZ. This is incorporated in the materials we use, and the process in which our products are made. Many of our products use NZ wool and are handmade by our artisans in Nepal, as part of a trade aid partnership, ensuring that communities that make our products are paid ethically. Our Rattan Range is made using a renewable resource that is sustainable. We work direct with a manufacturer to ensure our production is created in an ethical manner.

I believe that the early years can leave a lasting impression on our later years in human development, and beautiful toys and playthings play a big part in that. When children can engage in creative, meaningful play they develop a creative imagination which can prepare them for their later years of learning and development. We also want our resources to tell a history of what once was, this is in our sustainable range where we reuse and recycle items that could be incorporated into children's play and play spaces. eg. silver napkin rings, silver trays, child sized cutlery and NZ made ceramic plates, tea sets etc.

We have a vision to incorporate Te Reo Māori in our products so that we can do our part to recognise the true identity of Aotearoa, NZ acknowledging the indigenous foundations of this land".
